The Total Cost of Praise

school1British parents are estimated to cough-up a staggering £117 million on rewarding their kids after good exam results. The average GCSE student is set to receive £110.43 worth of gifts or cash, with A Level students scooping £158.52.

More than half of the 3000 parents polled said they incentivise their kids to excel in important school exams or competitions, which totals a sizeable £1506.59 over the course of one child’s education.

Nationally this tots up to a whopping £117,347,760, according to the poll by Omega-3 supplement maker Equazen Eye Q.

More than three quarters felt today’s kids get too much, too soon. Despite this, 5% of sixth formers have been promised a second hand car in return for good A level grades, while 12% will get driving lessons. Paying for holidays and laptops were among the other top incentives parents use to encourage their children to excel in their school exams.

Three quarters of parents also reward their children with toys, money and computer games if they perform well in the classroom throughout both primary school and secondary school.

A spokesman for Equazen said, ‘’It’s completely natural for parents to want their children to excel in school and every family is different in how they encourage this.

‘’A quarter of parents said children respond well to money but an average of £1,506 worth of treats can soon mount up for parents incentivising more than one child.

'’Parents can also help their kids get the most out of classroom learning by supporting  exam revision and helping stressed out kids solve a tricky homework dilemma.”

The poll also showed 26 per cent of parents reward children as young as four with cinema trips or days out when they receive satisfactory school reports.

As well as big exams like GCSEs and A Levels, 50% of parents reward their offspring throughout the term for good work and spend an average of a tenner. Doing well in school sporting events also warrants a reward for 12% of kids.
